HealthStreet Newsletter Issue 99: April 2021

HealthStreet Newsletter Issue 99
April is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month

April is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. Head and neck cancer is more common among men than women and often among people over age 50. Symptoms of head and neck cancers may include a lump or a sore in the neck area that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, difficulty swallowing, and a change or hoarseness in the voice. Alcohol and tobacco use are the top two risk factors; additionally, infection with cancer-causing types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is a risk factor for some types of head and neck cancers. These cancers are preventable with certain lifestyle modifications. To greatly reduce the chances of developing head and neck cancer, individuals should consider:

Eliminating tobacco use

Reducing alcohol consumption

 Practicing safer oral sex

Among HealthStreet cancer survivors, 10 (0.9%) of our members reported throat cancer, 6 (0.5%) reported oral cancer, and 20 (1.8%) reported thyroid cancer.
