UF HealthStreet and Cooperative Extension collaboration wins first place Innovations Award from the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges)

The AAMC has recognized Linda B. Cottler, Ph.D., M.P.H., FACE, Catherine W. Striley, Ph.D., M.S.W., ACSW, M.P.E, and Michael Gutter, Ph.D. with 1st place in the 2022 Innovations that Bolster Community Trust in Science Awards. The AAMC award highlights and recognizes pioneering approaches that bolster community trust and engagement in scientific developments that promote human health. Entries were judged on creativity, impact, and ability to replicate the innovation.

The initiative was honored for its innovative collaboration between the CHW-based HealthStreet model and the Land Grant Extension Program which provides community-based programming in all Florida counties. CHWs and Extension Agents, both trusted sources in the community, work together to deliver culturally and linguistically diverse health messages in plain language about COVID-19 in areas of high vaccine hesitancy, bring vaccines to people where they are, and distribute NARCAN for opioid overdose prevention.

NARCAN® SAVES LIVES

NARCAN Saves Lives

NARCAN® Nasal Spray may counteract the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. Since most accidental overdoses occur in a home setting, it was developed for family, friends, and caregivers – with no medical training required.
HealthStreet has partnered with Florida Department of Children and Families to distribute NARCAN® in our community. Call 352-294-4880 today to get your own NARCAN® Nasal Spray.

Every month, HealthStreet hosts a variety of services, Community Health Worker outreach efforts, classes, support groups, and events! Check out our May calendar.

+ The PROACT study is testing whether meditation and brain stimulation can enhance balance, brain function, and reduce pain. Eligible participants must be 45-85 years of age with knee pain for 3 months or more.

+ The LAMPS study is examining the effects of GABA on sleep quality and chronic pain in older adults. Eligible participants must be 45 years of age or older, have a smartphone, experience poor sleep, and experience moderate pain on more days that not.

+ The Rogue study is examining the role of the gut microbiome on how adults think. Eligible participants must be 50 years of age or older, HIV+, and willing to get an MRI.

+ The Effects of Orange Juice study is observing the effectiveness of orange juice to maintain skin health and reduce aging. Eligible participants must be 45-65 years of age, female, white, at least 110 pounds, and have a BMI of 18.5-29.9.

+ The Pain Mechanisms study wants to understand how variability in pain represents fluctuation in pain management and train people to maximize their body’s ability to manage pain. Eligible participants must be 18-69 years of age, have chronic pain or fibromyalgia, and have difficulty sleeping.

If you are interested in hearing about these or other studies, contact our Study Navigator, Sara, at 352-294-4873.
