At HealthStreet, we care for you and your health. We want to make sure to refer you to every needed cancer screening. Coming soon is a study of women who live in Alachua County, are 50 to 80 years of age and have a significant smoking history (25 pack years or more) for lung cancer screening, the Women Helping Women – Lung Cancer Screening Study. Talk to your CHW or come in and see us if you are interested in any information or referrals.

January is National Blood Donor month. According to the American Red Cross, winter presents a challenge for blood donations with holiday schedules and weather conditions often resulting in canceled blood drives. More than ever, with COVID-19 and CDC safety guidelines, potential donors are forgoing this important practice. In January, we are reminded that someone needs a blood donation every few seconds in the US and over 4.5 million people in the US would die every year without lifesaving blood transfusions. Give blood- save lives! Download The American Red Cross Blood Donor app to help you find blood drives happening all around the country.

Your dog can donate blood, too. Check with your veterinarian and the Humane Society to make sure you know the local rules and regulations for this type of donation.

Even during COVID-19, HealthStreet continues to serve you with our dedicated Community Health Workers (CHWs). This week our team will be at Gainesville Community Ministry USDA Food Distribution from 8 AM to 11 AM. Every week, CHWs are at locations around the city to give FREE health resources, like Deterra™and NARCAN® Nasal Spray, help you know which research studies you may be eligible for, and sign you up to be a HealthStreet member.

Interested in participating in research?

Here are a few studies that you can participate in now:

+The Laboratory and Field Validation of a Wrist-Worn Alcohol Monitor Study is testing a newly-developed wrist-worn alcohol monitor to see how accurate and reliable it is. Eligible participants must be 21-64 years of age, HIV+, and within the past 30 days have had more than 3 drinks like beer, wine, or liquor in a single day.

+The Familial, Geographic, and Social Determinants of Mental Well-Being in Rural LGBTQ+ Adolescents Study is exploring how sexual orientation and gender combined with family, social, and geographic environments impact well-being. Eligible participants must be 13-18 years of age and self-identify as LGBTQ+.

If you are interested in hearing about these or other studies, contact our Study Navigator, Sara, at 352-294-4873.

Do you or someone you know have cancer? We'd love to talk about opportunities to participate in research. Please share this link to become a member and learn about cancer screenings.
