Today is Random Act of Kindness Day! Everyone can use more kindness in their lives. Scientific evidence has shown that there are positive effects of doing kind acts for others, as well as receiving or even witnessing kindness. Even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. When we tune into kindness happening around us, a day can seem a little bit brighter and a week can seem a little more manageable. Get inspiration for a random act of kindness with these ideas.

February is International Recreational Therapy Month. A recreational therapist treats and helps maintain the physical, mental and emotional well-being by seeking to reduce depression, stress, anxiety and recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities, and build confidence. Because of the range of activities, many people with various health conditions can benefit from this kind of therapy. According to HealthStreet data, 5% of our members report serious head injury, 6.3% report muscle or bone conditions like fibromyalgia, osteomyelitis, osteoporosis, scoliosis and 11.4% report using speech therapy. Check out UF Health's Equal Access Specialty Clinics to find low to no cost clinics near you.

HEALTHSTREET NEWS

HealthStreet has connected 6,000+ members to research studies

Thank you to all our community members for participating!

The goal of health related research is to develop generalizable knowledge that has the potential to improve people’s lives and/or increase understanding of health and disease. Through community and other stakeholder engagement, we can better understand the priorities of the community -- their health problems and concerns. Only through broad participation in community-relevant research can we hope to reduce disparities in healthcare and health outcomes.

Interested in participating in research?

Here are a few studies that you can participate in now:

+The Development of a Conceptual Model of Emergency Department Utilization Among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Patients Study is exploring reasons deaf and hard-of-hearing people use the UF Health Gainesville emergency room. Eligible participants must be 18 of age years or older, identity as deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have hearing loss, and have used UF Health’s ER in Gainesville within the past 3 years.

+The Pain Relief for OsteoArthritis through Combined Treatment (PROACT) Study is testing whether a five-day course of mindfulness meditation training (MMT) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and their combination, can enhance balance, brain function, and reduce pain. Eligible participants must be 45-85 years of age, non-Hispanic White or Black/African American, and experience knee pain.

If you are interested in hearing about these or other studies, contact our Study Navigator, Sara, at 352-294-4873.

Do you, or does someone you know, have cancer? We'd love to talk about opportunities to participate in research. Share this link to become a member and learn about cancer screenings.

Would you like to be screened for thinking and memory?  HealthStreet is offering free memory screening and referral as a direct response to the needs of our community with funding from the Florida Department of Health. Call us if you, a friend, or family member would like to be screened. We can do this while you sit safely at home!
