Diabetes Alert Day
Each year on the fourth Tuesday in March, the American Diabetes Association marks Diabetes Alert Day. The national one-day event takes place this year on Tuesday, March 24, and its goal is to urge individuals to understand their risk for diabetes and take proactive steps toward prevention and early detection.
This year’s observance highlights the reality that 38.4 million people in the US are living with diabetes, and 8.7 million of them don’t yet know it. At the same time, roughly 97.6 million adults have prediabetes, a condition that can progress to type 2 diabetes without lifestyle changes or medical intervention.
Diabetes Alert Day reminds us that understanding risk factors, recognizing symptoms early, and making small, sustainable lifestyle choices can dramatically reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. It’s also a chance to encourage friends, family, and colleagues to explore available resources and take meaningful steps toward long‑term health.
Florida residents can take advantage of UF HealthStreet's HealthScreen initiative for a no-cost screening for diabetes, along with screenings for hypertension, heart disease risk and stroke. HealthScreen events can be found at community events and can be found on this calendar.
The chart below shows nurse-reported diabetes risk and self-reported history of diabetes among HealthScreen participants. The data below show 60% of HealthScreen participants were identified as not at risk for diabetes, while 40% were flagged as at risk based on nurse assessments. Among those identified as at risk, 38% reported a history of diabetes, while 62% reported no previous history and had not been previously identified.

The University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions’ PHHP Days is an annual celebration of research from the undergraduate to postdoctoral level, featuring oral and poster presentations from more than 200 students. Ahead of PHHP Days 2026, taking place April 15 and 16, speakers will share sneak peeks of their talks and what they hope listeners will learn.

Consider Donating to HealthStreet
Together, we can make a difference!
Your donation will directly support essential services and truly make a difference in our community. Every dollar you contribute helps us take steps towards reducing disparities that affect so many.
Just imagine the impact of your generosity: for $25, you can provide 15 personal care items, ensuring dignity and basic hygiene for those in need. With $50, we can purchase 16 daily bus passes to RTS, giving individuals reliable transportation to access vital jobs, healthcare, and services. And with $100, we can fuel the vehicles that our Community Health Workers use with 25 gallons of gasoline, enabling them to reach those in need and provide critical referrals and support.
We are also asking for direct donations of personal care items such as: shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, body wash, shaving kits & cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, deodorant, floss, pads, tampons, disposable wipes, hairbrushes and diapers.
Another way that you can make an impact in our community is by donating to the HealthStreet Clothing Closet! There is an ongoing need of the following items: men's clothing, women's clothing, children's clothing, baby clothing.
Clothing and personal care items can be directly donated at our HealthStreet location anytime between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, so we can place these items into the hands of those who need them.
Let’s join forces and create an extraordinary impact together!
Thank you for your kindness!
