Pain Awareness Month

9-3-25_pain_awareness_month_graph
The month of September marks International Pain Awareness Month. This month signals an annual global campaign to help spread awareness of issues related to pain and pain management.

In 2024, the US Pain Foundation reported that 51.6 million (21%) adults live with chronic pain and 1-in-4 Americans endure pain every day.

Chronic pain is typically caused by an injury or a health condition. However, there are many other reasons for chronic pain including genetics, older age, being female, surgery, overweight, stress or mood disorders and trauma.

One of the most common types of pain is bone pain. Below is the lifetime history of bone pain among HealthStreet members. As shown in the figure, this pain is equally reported by men and women 45 to 64 years of age and older (28%). Reports of bone pain are lower among those 18-44 years of age (12%) regardless of sex.

Egg Roll in a Bowl

Whip up this quick, flavor-packed egg roll in a bowl using just four simple ingredients. With all the savory goodness of a classic egg roll, minus the wrapper, this quick skillet meal is perfect for busy weeknights or easy meal prep.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 pound ground turkey, chicken, beef, or pork

  • 1 (16-ounce) bag coleslaw mix

  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • Toppings of your choice, optional (see recipe note)

  • Cooked white or brown rice for serving, optional

Instructions:
  • Heat the oil in a very large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until hot. Add the ground meat and use a spatula to gently break it into smaller pieces. Cook until the meat is browned with no pink remaining, 5 to 6 minutes. Turn off the heat, drain the excess fat from the meat (if needed), and return the skillet to the heat.

  • Stir the coleslaw mix into the cooked meat. Cook until the cabbage just starts to wilt but is still crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the soy sauce and ground ginger and cook for 1 more minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Sprinkle with toppings of your choice, if desired. Serve on its own or over rice.

Consider Donating to HealthStreet

toiletry-drive-poster

Together, we can make a difference!

Your donation will directly support essential services and truly make a difference in our community. Every dollar you contribute helps us take steps towards reducing disparities that affect so many.

Just imagine the impact of your generosity: for $25, you can provide 15 personal care items, ensuring dignity and basic hygiene for those in need. With $50, we can purchase 16 daily bus passes to RTS, giving individuals reliable transportation to access vital jobs, healthcare, and services. And with $100, we can fuel the vehicles that our Community Health Workers use with 32 gallons of gasoline, enabling them to reach those in need and provide critical referrals and support.

We are also asking for direct donations of personal care items such as: shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, body wash, shaving kits & cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, deodorant, floss, pads, tampons, disposable wipes, hairbrushes and diapers.

Another way that you can make an impact in our community is by donating to the HealthStreet Clothing Closet! There is an ongoing need of the following items: men's clothing, women's clothing, children's clothing, baby clothing.

Clothing and personal care items can be directly donated at our HealthStreet location anytime between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so we can place these items into the hands of those who need them.

Let’s join forces and create an extraordinary impact together!

Thank you for your kindness!
